All of these are part and parcel of your life and you cannot run away from them. However, you can surely prevent them. Of course, you cannot hold on to your age, but you can surely slow down the loss of glow and radiance from your skin.
Many of us dream of having fairer glowing skin. We try commercially available creams and beauty products, but the effect only lasts for a certain period of time. These products also vary in their safety and can be expensive.
Best homemade remedies for glowing skin and fairness in winter
Let me share the best home remedies my grandmother taught me. They may not give instant results, but you will notice a marvelous change after 45 days.
1. Turmeric Remedy For Glowing Skin
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It will eliminate the harmful free radicals that are damaging the skin. It also enhances collagen production, and this keeps your skin supple and glowing (1). Gram flour gently cleanses the skin to make it clean and bright.
1/2-1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 4 tablespoons gram flour (also called chickpea flour), Milk or water
Mix the turmeric powder with the gram flour. To this, add enough milk or water to form a paste. Apply this on your face and neck. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with plain water.
2. Baking Soda For Glowing Skin
Baking soda exfoliates dead skin cells and also neutralizes the skin’s pH. It soothes the skin and heals any inflammation that may be present as well (2).
1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon honey
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Apply the mixture on damp face and neck using circular motions. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Moisturize as usual.
3. Lemon For Glowing Skin
The sugar granules help to get rid of dead cells. Lemon cleanses, bleaches, and also removes tan (3). It is one of nature’s best skin brightening agents.
2 teaspoons lemon juice, 2 teaspoons sugar
Mix the ingredients and apply the mixture on your face. Scrub in a circular motion and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water to reveal glowing skin. Repeat this twice a week.
4. Curd mask
For all those who love eating curd for its probiotic properties, there’s good news. It is not just good for your stomach. Curd, like milk, contains lactic acid. As mentioned before, lactic acid is a lightener and helps to give you that fair skin. Simply applying curd on your face can make it glow. Like stated previously, you can add turmeric to this mask as well. Curd gives you an instant glow and makes your face look bright. Apply this face mask daily for a week to get fair skin.
5. Sandalwood mask
The lovely fragrance of this mask will awaken your senses! Sandalwood has been an age-old ingredient in skin care and has been used by generations of Indian women. This mask is very gentle and is suitable for all skin types and helps you get a fair skin in just 7 days. It is also very soothing and is excellent for Indian summers when you want to apply something cool to your skin after a day under the hot glare of the sun!
If you can get hold of a genuine sandalwood stick, you can grind it against a flat stone or a grindstone with some water to get a runny paste. You can also buy pure sandalwood powder and mix it with rose water (another cooling agent) to make a paste. Apply this on your face and leave for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with cold water.
6. Potato mask
Potatoes are rich in vitamin c and niacin, both effective skin lighteners. Simply grate a potato and add some milk to it. You can also mix them in a food processor to get a creamy paste. Use daily for best fairness results.
7. Glycerin mask
Contrary to the popular motion, glycerin is not just a softener. It is very effective in skin lightening. This mask, however, is best suited for those with dry or oily skin.
8. Almonds to Lighten and Protect Skin In Winter
Almonds are rich in Vitamin E, which protects skin from the sun’s darkening rays. Make a paste by soaking almonds in water overnight. In the morning, make a paste of the softened almonds and mix with raw milk.
Apply to your face and wash off after 20 minutes. This will make your skin soft and supple. Repeating this treatment will lighten your skin and while protecting it from the sun.
9. Gram Flour Mixture to Lighten Skin
Mix besan (gram or garbanzo bean flour) with tomato, curd, honey, lemon juice, and rose water. Apply this mixture to your face at night and wash off with water after 30 minutes. Avoid using soap.
For best results, do not wash it off directly, but pat your face with wet hands and try to massage the mixture for two minutes before rinsing off completely. This will remove dirt, blackheads, and tan skin cells. Your skin will be silky soft. Use this recipe daily and you will have wonderful skin.
10. Honey For Glowing Skin
Honey has antimicrobial and hygroscopic properties that clean and makes your skin soft. It is rich in antioxidants that make the skin soft and healthy and also reduce blemishes (4).
Honey, Apply honey evenly on clean and damp skin. Massage it for a few minutes and leave it on for another five minutes. Wash the honey off with lukewarm warm water. Apply honey every alternate day.
11. Olive Oil For Glowing Skin
Olive oil is an excellent skin moisturizer and renders a natural shine as well. The flavonoids and polyphenols present in it protect the skin from free radicals and prevent damage. It repairs the skin cells and makes it healthy and glowing (5).
1 tablespoon olive oil, A small, soft towel, Warm water
Take a few drops of oil on your fingertips, and apply it all over the face and neck. Massage in upward circles for two to three minutes, especially on your cheeks, nose, and forehead. Dip the towel in the warm water, remove the excess water, and place this on the face for 30 to 40 seconds. Dip the towel again in the warm water and gently wipe away the oil with it. Pat your skin dry with a paper towel if required. Do this every night before going to bed.
12. Green Tea For Glowing Skin
Green tea leaves are rich in flavonoids, which maintain the collagen production in the skin. It maintains the elasticity of the skin, makes your skin glow, and reverses the signs of aging (6).
1 tablespoon green tea leaves, 1 cup water, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cream
Boil the tea leaves in water. When they impart color, remove from the flame. Cool it and add two teaspoons from it in a bowl. To this, add the brown sugar and cream, and mix well. Apply all over the face and scrub gently in circular motions. Rinse with cold water after 10 minutes. Apply this once or twice a week.
13. Rose Water For Glowing Skin
Rose water is a commonly used skin toner. It cleanses and refreshes the skin. It brightens the skin tone by stimulating blood circulation. It also balances the pH of the skin (7).
Rose water, Cotton ball
Keep the rose water in the fridge for half an hour. Dip the cotton ball in the rose water and apply it all over the face and neck. Repeat this every morning and evening.
